Extended Reality Performance
LIVE @ Mesh – Festival
October 16–20, 2024
The experience blends the mesmerizing beauty of bioluminescence with the harsh realities of pollution, serving as a metaphor for the delicate balance of our ecosystems.
We immerse ourselves visually in the dream machine, forgetting that our impact, though invisible, can be physically immense. The technological backbone of «Currents» is built on streaming real-time data into a game engine, either through sensor kits or existing datasets, enabling instant visualization of air pollution through interactive virtual plankton that illuminate when touched or moved, through motion capture technologies. Art, research, and technology merge in this prototype, capable of crafting visual narratives in an environment that invites a variety of performance jams.
«Currents» — playful only at first glance, is an immersive experience, a call to unite as a community to protect our air by making it visible.
« YOUR AIR, YOUR ACTION »
ABOUT «Currents» is a performance-based transmedia artwork by Géraldine Honauer and is shown in it’s first prototype version during the Mesh Festival in Basel.
«Currents» is co-produced with Daniel Boubet and Florian Weinrich and developed as part of the «Spatial Affairs» residency program that aims to foster immersive, collective experiences, using the Extended Reality (XR) platform AIRE developed by iart and real-time interactions. In collaboration with three international cultural institutions—HEK (House of Electronic Arts) in Basel, MAP (Museum of Art & Photography) in Bangalore, and Tabakalera in San Sebastián— three selected artists have developed new XR-based projects during six-week residencies in the summer of 2024. With the support of the technology partners iart and TEKNIKER, as well as the research partner metaLAB (at) Basel, the residency artists worked on site-specific installations that explore the boundaries between physical and digital spaces.
SUPPORT «Spatial Affairs» is a Synergies project supported by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia. «Currents» is supported by Aargauer Kuratorium.
JOIN US «Currents» We’re looking for institutional partners and collaborators to extend the vision of Currents.
We welcome designers, scientists, performers, and institutions to contribute resources, expertise, or simply exchange ideas – your skills can make a difference. Be part of a movement that turns invisible pollution into visible action.
